Since Alzheimer’s disease barely existed a century the growing rates of the disease prevalent today now meets the definition of a global epidemic. Alzheimer’s is another severe neurological disorder similar to autism, except occurring in adults. Current research strongly suggests that mercury exposure plays a role in the development of the disease. Scientists have shown that trace amounts of mercury can cause the type of damage to nerves that is characteristic of the damage found in Alzheimer’s disease.
Mercury has been found to induce or increase the production of all of the hallmark signs of Alzheimer’s disease including neurofibrillary tangles, tau proteins, beta amyloid and senile plaques. Dr. Boyd Haley, previous Chairman of the Chemistry Department at the University of Kentucky demonstrated Alzheimer’s disease-like brain damage to rats from inhaled mercury vapor. Dr. Haley, commenting on the importance of this new documentation said, “Seven of the characteristic markers that we look for to distinguish Alzheimer’s disease can be produced in normal brain tissues, or cultures of neurons, by the addition of extremely low levels of mercury.
While not the only possible cause of Alzheimer’s disease, the evidence for mercury at the very least indicates a need for precautions against mercury exposure. World Mercury Project recommends individuals of all ages should avoid exposure to mercury for all sources; seafood known to contain high levels of mercury, mercury amalgam dental fillings, and vaccines which are preserved with the mercury based preservative thimerosal.
